How Does Speech Therapy Work?

Speech therapy is a type of treatment that aims to resolve speech challenges by focusing on the area in which the client needs help. Therapy will look a little bit different for everyone, because no two clients are the same.
Common strategies include articulation therapy that focuses on proper pronunciation, physical exercises that demonstrate how the tongue is used to form certain words, and tongue, lip, and jaw exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of the mouth.
Speech therapy is critical in preventing a number of problems from occurring. Left untreated, patients have a higher risk of developing hearing loss, weakened oral muscles, excess drooling, breathing problems, and feeding or swallowing disorders. The younger the patient, the more successful speech therapy tends to be. Early intervention is crucial.
Our Process: What to Expect
We believe effective therapy starts with understanding your unique needs. Here’s how our process works:
1. Screenings
Speech screenings are brief consultations that help determine whether a full evaluation is recommended. We conduct free speech and hearing screenings throughout the community and in our clinic for children ages 3 and up.
2. Evaluations
Speech evaluations are comprehensive assessments to identify a client’s strengths and areas of need. Our SLPs evaluate a patient’s speech, language, cognitive, communication, and oral/swallowing skills in order to diagnose speech disorders and determine the most effective treatment options. We use standardized testing and clinical observation to create individualized treatment plans for each client.
3. Therapy Sessions
Speech therapy focuses on achieving measurable, specific goals. We encourage family members and caretakers to participate in speech therapy sessions if they would like. By observing a session, caretakers can stay informed and learn important tools for practicing speech skills at home.
We offer individual speech therapy in our center, and individual and group therapy in schools. Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure the best outcome for each client.
