A Support Service Provider (SSP) is sometimes called a Co-Navigator. An SSP provides assistance to Deaf-Blind (DB) individuals in tasks and activities so they may lead more independent lives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES
- Provide services to the DB individual including, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Sighted guide or co-navigation within the community.
- Reading the mail, newspaper, books, etc.
- Visiting with the DB person or accompanying DB person to social activity.
- Transportation to and/or from errands or appointments within the community.
- Communicate effectively with the Program Manager.
- Maintain a working relationship with other staff members, the community and Columbus Speech & Hearing.
- Be flexible in working with DB individual(s) based on their needs.
- Be willing to work with all consumers in the program.
- Be responsible to notify the DB individual(s) and the Program Manager when unable to work a scheduled time with the DB individual.
- Attend SSP training provided as required by program guidelines.
- Attend scheduled meetings for the SSP staff, as established by program guidelines.
- Submit weekly timesheets for hours worked.
- Possess a Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency in the communication method of the DB individual (i.e., American Sign Language or Tactile Signing)
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, how to provide navigation assistance to DB individuals
- Trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality
- Dependable
- Flexibility is required
