Did you know that Audiologists are considered experts in the balance system? The vestibular (balance) organ is housed in the inner ear and uses input from your eyes, muscles, joints, and inner ear to maintain balance. We often take good balance for granted; however, those with balance-related issues can find them debilitating.
What is a balance disorder?
A balance disorder is a condition that makes you feel unsteady or dizzy. There are many causes of imbalance/dizziness. Approximately 50% of all dizziness cases are related to an inner ear issue. The balance system is susceptible to damage due to injury, aging, or disease.
Symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Vertigo
- Vision Issues
- Nausea
- Concentration Difficulties
- Fatigue
Imbalance and dizziness are very common in the older population. These issues tend to increase not only in prevalence but also in persistence as we age. To determine a proper treatment plan for dizziness and imbalance, your physician may refer you to several specialists, including Neurology, Physical Therapy, Otolaryngology (ENT), Ophthalmology, and others. In treating dizziness, it is best to consider a multidisciplinary approach.
